What it is

A filling repairs a small hole. A crown covers a tooth that’s too broken or cracked for a filling to hold. We’ll show you the x-ray and tell you which one you need and why — if a filling will do, we won’t sell you a crown.

Fillings are tooth-coloured composite, never silver. Crowns are porcelain, matched to the shade of your other teeth with a shade guide in daylight.

What happens

  1. Numb the tooth

    Topical gel first, then the injection. Most people don’t feel the needle.

  2. Clean out the damage

    Remove the decay or the cracked part. This is the part people dread; it takes ten minutes.

  3. Fill or fit

    A filling is shaped and set with a light in the same visit. For a crown, we take a digital scan, fit a temporary, and seat the final one two weeks later.
