What it is

A root canal treats the nerve inside a tooth that’s infected or dying — that’s what causes the deep, throbbing pain that wakes you up. The procedure removes the nerve, cleans the inside of the tooth and seals it. The tooth stays; the pain goes.

The reputation is worse than the reality. You’re numb the whole time, and most patients say it felt like a long filling. Dr. Okafor does these here, so you don’t get sent across town to a specialist you’ve never met.

What happens

  1. Numb and isolate

    The tooth is fully numbed and a small rubber sheet keeps it dry and clean.

  2. Clean the canals

    The infected nerve tissue is removed and the canals inside the roots are cleaned and shaped.

  3. Seal and protect

    The canals are filled and sealed. Back teeth usually get a crown a couple of weeks later so they don’t crack.
